Desktop Semantics With Nepomuk

Meta data and semantic information on the desktop are big topics these days. Nepomuk-KDE is the first project to bring together and relate all sorts of information on the desktop using advanced semantic web technologie. We all know typical desktop search as provided by many systems: searching for files and emails using the meta data that can easily be extracted. Nepomuk goes one step further. It provides a means to store valuable information that to date is simply lost. It allows the user to provide meta data about files, dates, persons, etc., and draw semantic links between these resources (Who took that photo where and with whom and during what event?). Additional information like the download location of a file can be remembered automatically.

One of the most important aspects of this technology is the integration into applications. It is the applications that gather and exploit the new information to make life easier for all users. Thus, the focus today is mainly on the applications integration.
